A Transformative Learning Experience

Fellows in the Brain Injury Medicine program receive advanced training in the assessment and management of brain injuries, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient recovery. The program includes hands-on experience in acute inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient brain injury clinics, and specialized programs for disorders of consciousness. Fellows will also have opportunities to engage in research, medical education, and innovative treatment approaches, ensuring they are well-prepared for a career in this evolving specialty.

Grand Rounds

Meet Dr. James Tran: The Inaugural Fellow

The first-ever fellow in the Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship is Dr. James Tran, a Salt Lake City native who is honored to pave the way for future trainees. His journey into medicine was unconventional—after working at a bank, he realized he wanted a more fulfilling career that allowed him to make a tangible difference in people's lives. This realization led him to medical school at the University of Utah and, ultimately, to a passion for brain injury rehabilitation.

Dr. Tran’s interest in brain injury medicine was sparked by an unfortunate accident that left his friend in a coma and with a brain injury. Thankfully, his friend has since recovered and is now doing well. Seeing patients regain consciousness and witnessing their turnaround time firsthand was incredibly impactful for him.

Initially drawn to outpatient care and sports medicine, his perspective shifted during training, and he now sees himself pursuing inpatient brain injury rehabilitation, where he can form lasting relationships with patients and their families.

Looking Ahead: Dr. Tran’s Aspirations

As he embarks on this fellowship, Dr. Tran is excited to work alongside esteemed mentors, including Dr. Derrick Allred, Dr. Colby Hansen, and Dr. Ali Flis. He looks forward to not only expanding his clinical knowledge but also playing a role in medical education, mentoring residents and medical students. As the inaugural fellow, he feels a deep sense of responsibility in shaping the program, ensuring a strong foundation for those who follow in his footsteps.

“This is a huge honor,” Dr. Tran shares. “Being the first fellow means I have the opportunity to help make the program successful, and lay a strong foundation for future fellows. We have incredible patients here, and I want to help build something meaningful.”

Beyond Medicine: Dr. Tran’s Life Outside the Hospital

When he’s not caring for patients, Dr. Tran values time with his close-knit group of friends, whom he has known for over a decade. He enjoys skiing and is a devoted member of a “horror movie cabal,” where he and his friends watch horror films together every Sunday. He also follows the “no carb left behind” philosophy—embracing all things food-related with enthusiasm.

A Bright Future for Brain Injury Rehabilitation

With Dr. Derrick Allred leading the way with Dr. Tran as the first fellow, the Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship at Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital is poised to become a premier training program for future physiatrists specializing in brain injury rehabilitation. His journey underscores the profound impact this field has—not only on patients but also on the medical professionals dedicated to their recovery.

As the program continues to grow, it will play a crucial role in advancing the field of brain injury medicine, improving patient outcomes, and training the next generation of leaders in rehabilitation medicine.
